What Are Xanthones?
|
|
Xanthones
Xanthones are a
class of polyphenolic compounds that commonly occur in
plants and have been shown to have extensive biological
and pharmacological activities. Recently, the
pharmacological properties of xanthones in the
cardiovascular system have attracted great interest.
The chemical structure of
xanthone forms the central core of a variety of naturally
occurring organic compounds, such as mangostin, which are
sometimes collectively referred to as xanthones. Over 200
xanthones have been identified.
Many
of these xanthones are found in the pericarp of the
mangosteen fruit (Garcinia mangostana), which can be found
in the region of Southeast Asia. |
 |
Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana), contains over 30
xanthones. The mangosteen has by far the most
xanthones of any plant. The pericarp of the
mangosteen fruit contains the vast majority of the
xanthones. |

Xanthones
are some
of the
most
potent
antioxidants
known. It
is thought
to be more
potent
than both
Vitamin C
and
Vitamin E.
In fact,
many
doctors
refer to xanthones
as "Super
Antioxidants."

 |
Xanthones are heat stable molecules. Unlike proteins,
they won't denature or lose their structure when
heated. |

Mangosteen
Studies
Among the
powerful phytonutrients found in the rind of the
mangosteen, xanthones stand alone in their impressive
benefits. Scientific studies suggest xanthones may promote
healthy bodily function. The whole mangosteen fruit,
packed with naturally occurring xanthones, may help: |
 |
Maintain
intestinal health* |
 |
Strengthen
the immune
system*
|
 |
Neutralize free radicals* |
 |
Support
cartilage and joint function* |
 |
Promote
a healthy seasonal respiratory system* |

Antioxidants
Antioxidants are substances that may protect cells from the damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. Antioxidants interact with and stabilize free radicals and may prevent some of the damage free radicals otherwise might cause. |
